Auburn University is planning one final roll of the historic Toomer's Corner Oaks this spring before the trees are removed.
The university announced Friday that the last rolling of the beloved trees, a tradition that dates to the 1950s, will take place on April 20 following the Tigers' spring game. Auburn football fans traditionally roll the trees with toilet paper after a win.
The school has not set a specific date to take down the poisoned oaks.
"The Oaks at Toomer's Corner have been a part of Auburn tradition for generations," Debbie Shaw, Auburn University vice president for alumni affairs and executive director of the Auburn Alumni Association, said in a statement. "Their removal will in no way diminish the Auburn Spirit, which has grown even stronger during these past two years."
Harvey Updyke, a lifelong Alabama fan, was charged with poisoning the trees during Auburn's run to the national championship in the 2010 football season.
Updyke, who has yet to stand trial due to numerous delays, has pleaded not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect to charges that include criminal mischief and desecrating a venerable object. The next trial date is set for April 8.

Yes, I heard that yesterday. I was hoping all along that maybe the trees would make it. It's a shame that one lunatic took this long time tradition from the Auburn fanbase.

Darn shame. Any word on what if anything Auburn has in place of these in the future?

Sucks. I'm not even an Auburn fan and I want to kick Updyke's ass. Tradition is one of the great things about college football.
“We who lived in concentration camps can remember the men who walked through the huts comforting others, giving away their last piece of bread. They may have been few in number, but they offer sufficient proof that everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms -- to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way.”

Auburn did take a big hit with that. Wasn't cool at all. Yet, moving forward with those trees, if I had a sky box in auburn's stadium I would be working to have oak paneling put in mine asap.

Sucks that Auburn's losing a trade mark all b/c of some idiot. Regardless of what team he pulls for, pulling a stunt like that is just ridiculous! RIP Toomer's Oaks.

If someone poisoned every tree in the Grove my head would explode. I'd be calling for someone's head. Or pounding my fists because I didn't have a head.

Are there any plans to replant? or bring trees in or something?
We got a bunch of trees in the grove, come on over and help yourself to a couple.

I can't see them not replanting but they will probably have to replace a lot of soil first.

Not saying Updyke is a not a despicable idiot, but those trees were dying way before Updyke poisoned them.

My buddy is an Auburn fan, if he goes down for the spring game, I'm gonna catch a ride with him. Solidarity and what not.
