What if Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany, who has coveted ACC schools like North Carolina, Virginia, Georgia Tech and even new member Pittsburgh, goes rogue and plucks two schools? The Big Ten would move to super-conference status with 16 members.
SEC counterpart Mike Slive would likely respond by adding two more, Virginia Tech and one other. Because of a “gentlemen’s agreement” in the league, the SEC would be unlikely to add schools in states where they already have members. Florida State, Miami, Clemson and Georgia Tech (if not taken by the Big Ten) could be left in a floundering conference.
Imagine two or four or even six schools desperately calling the Big 12 seeking refuge and an immediate answer. The Big 12 would have to be prepared for a move large enough to reshape college sports.
Bowlsby told “The Ticket” KTCK-AM (1310) on Wednesday that he was “not convinced based on my conversations with both commissioners that the move to 16 is in any way imminent.”
Two days later, The Columbus Dispatch published minutes of an Ohio State athletic council meeting from December, after the Big Ten’s addition of Maryland and Rutgers. Ohio State president Gordon Gee told the group that “there has been ongoing discussion” about expansion and that he “believes there is movement towards three or four super conferences that are made up of 16-20 teams.”
Other scenarios could be in play, too. What if the majority of the conferences in the coming four-team football playoff mandate a conference title game as a condition for selection?
While the Big 12 seems set on 10, things could change. In an interview before the NCAA Convention, Texas men’s athletic director DeLoss Dodds, who favors 10 schools for now, acknowledged “there may be some thought of 12.”
Last month at the Heart of Dallas Bowl, Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy endorsed additional schools in the Big 12.
“Well, I think we need to expand,” Gundy said. “I said it last year and everybody laughed at me at the Big 12 meetings. I think other people are trying to expand, and I think if you don’t [expand] you get caught behind the 8-ball, in my opinion.”

If we go to 16-20 and make a title game a factor for the BCS wouldnt centralized scheduling via the BCS be the next step? Cutting all the non BCS schools out of the loop?
Hope is not a policy

Expansion... simply an idea that is typical of how the world is going.... more is better. I don't happen to agree with that line of thinking, though. Expansion equals greed, imo.

4-16 team conferences. 64 total teams. they tell the ncaa to go
them self. make playoff system. usc loses to fla but beats them in the playoffs. didn't that make the first time they met on a sat afternoon mean something. ohio st loses to mich st. beats them in the playoff. didn't care about the first game but now it has to take up channel space on my tv twice. all of this sucks.

I actually agree with this. The whole expansion crap is about lining their pockets. No offense to aTm and Mizzou but I wish things would have stayed the way they were.
If it ain't broke don't fix it. Really will be glad when they get all this wrapped up one way or another. Enough is enough already.

Been hearing some serious talk here in Texas about the Big 12 looking to pull in U of Houston (New Stadium and Houston TV Market and money), New Mexico State(Largest U in New Mexico and new TV market), Florida State(Recruiting and new TV market)) and Georgia Tech (Recruiting and new TV market) and Clemson( Recruiting and TV New market). I know that some of the schools like Iowa, Kansas, Texas Tech and Okie State would like any of those teams to compete with.
Dodds got shut down by the other schools in the last Big12 meeting. They keep throwing aTm and Missouri leaving in his face and told him to think about expansion and getting new schools and markets into the Big12. New BIG12 Commish is all for 16 teams and expanded revenue.
The landscape for this coming football season has changed,
The BigWest (Formerly Mountain West) has 14 schools now, 2 divisions and a championship game
The WAC is no longer. Most got adopted, they put New Mexico State and Idaho in the foster home for Independents.
The ACC gets Pitt and Cuse and gone is Maryland in 2014 if not sooner.
The Big Easy gets UH (Can still get out before July), Memphis, SMU, UCF, out is Pitt and Cuse and in is 2 division conference with a Championship game
In 2014 they get E. Carolina and Tulane and loose Louiseville to the ACC
Big 10 is picking up Maryland and Rutgers
C-USA and Sunbelt are a current cluster f_ck and the MAC, PAC and SEC have not done anything yet.
Things will be different in 2014 too.
But if you look LONG TERM Expansion, like a 100 year commitment and certain level of top teir academics then you have to seriously look at the NC /Duke, Florida State, Virginia, NC State, relationship and the long term money they have for their programs.
I honestly don't see schools like Georgia Tech, Clemson and Florida State making it to the SEC. We already occupy those TV markets. But i see the interest that the BIG12 has in them. They can pick up the orphaned NM State and UH cheap right now. I also see their point in pulling in some academics like Rice (Hou), Tulane(N.O La TV ), and SMU (Dallas/Ft. Worth) or Vigina (VA), they do have programs other than football along with serious finances and revenue streams. The BIG12 could easily get to 16 teams if they wanted too.

Wonder who makes the first move...Big 10 or Big 12? It's been quiet a lot longer than I thought, well except for big name schools.

Hmm, I just wish whoever is expanding would just do it so we could quit talking about this mess. Expansion has almost become a four letter word to me lol.

Expansion is stupid. It's bad enough we have to wait a decade to play most schools in the opposite division; if we keep adding schools the SEC is going to weaken its centuries-old rivalries and the best conference in the country is going to lose its luster.
I kept failing a math test at the University of Alabama because every time I added 5+3 I got 8 and they kept insisting that the right answer was 14.
