a medical hardship means he cant play again and is giving up football.

There are tons of other scholarships colleges give out other then Athletic ones. If a kid is hurt after he has commited to you I think they should find a way to let him start school at the normal time. Then the next year he can "walk-on" and join the team and be transferred to a Athletic scholly. while still having all 4 years of eligibility left. No reason a kid should have to sit out of school just because he got hurt on the football field.

Your solution reads like this:

"magic"

How so? I bet I applied for a gazillion different scholarships when I was in school. You think Saban could just so happen to secure one for a kid who "one day next year just might want to try out for the football team"

You are really reaching.

Where would he get one of those scholarships from?
And at whose expense?

You apply and pray to god whoever is on the selection committee picks you. And it being Saban I would be willing to bet he could have his hand in that cookie jar if he wanted.

Normally to get a SCHOLARship, you have to have some decent academics.
I would bet the farm that a greyshirt candidate that was awarded a full scholarship wouldn't be missed by the "media".

Different story if your talking about someone your just putting on the back burner. It is different when it is a kid who got hurt and has to sacrifice a year or not go to the school he though he was going to for the past 8 months or more. Turns bad press into good press.

Just because he joins the team in December doesn't mean he's not going to school. Grayshirt means he has to foot the bill for 1 semester without the scholarship and then he'll be officially on the team. He's not losing school time where he's not doing anything. And I'm pretty sure he'll be eligible to use the athletic facilities and trainers.

I honestly dont see why giving him a scholly is an issue.   Arnt they 2-3 deep at every position?   so maybe wait 2-3 year for playing time.   Thats more than enough time to recover and learn.
