Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, Auburn, and LSU don't need the SEC pride stuff.
Hell, we snuck into the title game over Michigan just 6 years ago. Those six can ride on name and recruiting rankings now that the BCS is gone.

I vote vt and nc.  We're going to dilute the conference some, but revenue is what grows programs.

It's not just SEC pride that fuels it; our top teams are stronger come post-season play because of the stout competition we all face every year. And we made the 2006 NCG over Michigan because of our SOS and SECCG.

Without an overall strong conference, we don't make that game, and we damn sure don't win it. In fact, without that SEC SOS, LSU doesn't make the 2007 NCG as a 2-loss team, either.

Like it or not, and realize it or not, the facts are that no matter how successful each individual program is, the SEC has brought as much to them as they've brought to the SEC. They go hand in hand.

A HUGE part of why we keep dominating in NCG's and bowl seasons is because of who we play during our regular seasons. Our perennial doormat (VU) just went 9-4 for crying out loud and beat the brakes off their bowl opponent (NCS). Our teams are better prepared for big games and tough games because we play them all year long; whereas teams from other conferences may play 2 or 3 challenging games a year, if that.

Think about it; your team/program doesn't improve by playing weak teams, they get stronger by playing the best on a regular basis... and that's the primary reason for wanting a strong overall conference. The rivalry hate is still plenty powerful during the regular season; but wanting your conference brethren to be successful OOC is a little bit pride and a lot of self-interest.

Hippies? In NC? I think you mean hillbillies. If there are any hippies below the Mason-Dixon line, they're in hiding and only come out at night.

I meant hippies. Asheville and Brevard are among the most densely populated with hippies per capita. I like hillbillies, I get sickened by hippies.

Duke has no fanbase and brings nothing to the table except basketball.

UNC is more all around better.

I hate UNC.

VaTech and NC State is better for the SEC.  I've said it for three years now that they will round out the SEC expansion.

How exactly does one define a hippie, and how could anyone possibly do a study that determined a demographic like that?

I would argue there hasn't been a real hippie in this country for decades, and definitely not in the South. If you mean these little freaks who smoke out and are anti-establishment, those aren't hippies... those are just dropouts.

If any Southerner thinks we have an overabundance of those, a trip to Seattle, Eugene, or Berkeley might be an eye-opening experience. ;)

That's probably right; I could see those 2 ending our expansion.

I think getting either Duke or UNC to leave each other in a different conference is unlikely, even though UNC would be far better for the SEC than NCS.

Going to have to figure out how to bypass those new ACC exit fees, though... $50 million a pop now.

The last thing i want is to see a bunch of UNC and Duke posters here. I hate em both but if one does come here i'd prefer it to be UNC. Like everyone else said, they bring the most to the table. Especially the size of there fanbase.

So? I listen to that stuff too. What people listen to doesn't make them hippies. Hippies were typically well-educated college students and professors with a cause (often a very admirable cause), an affinity for open-minded thinking, weed, peace, love, music, and sex. And like any demographic, there were good and bad examples.

These days, what people call themselves and what other people label them as are both usually grossly inaccurate.

Most of the people I know from NC are NASCAR junkies and/or rednecks... redundant, I know. I have some family up there that fled Miami as it got exceedingly dangerous to live there, and they're not rednecks, hillbillies, or hippies; just average, professional people with a family. I used to go skiing up there a lot, and my father stays in the mountains up there for about 2 or 3 months every year, and always loves it; but that's what little I know about the state.

You are looking at it from purely an athletic perspective.  You have to consider from many viewpoints.

You get competitive athletics programs in 2 big-time markets without an existing SEC footprint. What's the downside in this scenario?
