are you open to learning why?
Im not going to insult your mental facilities, but the notion that you need an entire arsenal of weaponry to ensure your freedom seems just as odd to me as my opinions seem to you

we already have a working set of restrictions on guns. Modern ones and everything. Most of the "new" rules were established in 95 and in use since 98. Can you atleast agree that we have a very comprehensive system of gun control and restrictions at the federal and state level?

I'm interested in hearing why people feel they need guns, but obviously I'm suspicious of people who oppose any gun restrictions (and that may or may not be you)

Hmm. Given the power and influence of the NRA as a lobbyist, I'm not sure if our laws are adequate or toothless in this regard.
Clearly Sandy Hook has stirred a feeling amongst many people that more should be done

what more at the federal level do you want to see done that is not currently being done? Sandy was a tradgic event that without removing the person that did it before hand was unavoidable. Sometimes evil people do evil things. Its not often or widespread or directly linked to firearms. It is an individual that acted alone. An individual that was denied the ablity to obtain legal firearms under the current system.

I don't have the answers. Obviously I'm in favor of making all guns outside of basic handguns difficult or impossible to obtain, but I realize this is impractical and possibly unfair

My mind just exploded.
I'll just regress, because I feel I've made myself perfectly redundant.

Again, I'm middle-aged and I have never needed or owned a gun, so the idea that guns are as essential to life as oxygen is mind-blowing
And I am OK with and support your right to not own them. I just what the same respect in return. If your town, city, county, state votes guns out I support them in their right to do so. I am as involved with town, city, county and state politics because no such vote would be allowed to happen here. People that dont want guns are free to adapt or move just like those that couldnt imagine life without them.

This is reasonable

The only caveat is that no movement be made at the national level to further restrict my rights. Executive orders or parliamentary abuses will not be tolerated. I will fight to defend my right to self rule. I am perfectly capable of doing so and there are millions like me that are poised to defend this country from itself. If that means sacrifices to comfort to see my state leave the Union, so be it. If it means more so be that too.

And now were back at 1861. See, this is the disconnect. It seems like gun ownership and states rights and all of that boils down to the idea that every Southerner wants to be a king unto himself

That was kind of the idea behind the founding of America. You know... self-determination?
