On Sunday, during an appearance on Meet The Press, Colin Powell condemned the GOP’s “dark vein of intolerance” and the party’s repeated use of racial code words to oppose President Obama and rally white conservative voters.
Without mentioning names, Powell singled out former Mitt Romney surrogate and New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu for calling Obama “lazy” and Sarah Palin, who, Powell charged, used slavery-era terms to describe Obama:

POWELL: There’s also a dark — a dark vein of intolerance in some parts of the party. What do I mean by that? I mean by that that they still sort of look down on minorities. How can I evidence that?
When I see a former governor say that the President is “shuckin’ and jivin’,” that’s racial era slave term. When I see another former governor after the president’s first debate where he didn’t do very well, says that the president was lazy. He didn’t say he was slow. He was tired. He didn’t do well. He said he was lazy. Now, it may not mean anything to most Americans, but to those of us who are African Americans, the second word is shiftless and then there’s a third word that goes along with that. The birther, the whole birther movement. Why do senior Republican leaders tolerate this kind of discussion within the party?

Watch it:
Powell added that the Republican Party is “having an identity problem,” noting that its significant shift to the right has produced “two losing presidential campaigns.” “I think what the Republican Party needs to do now is a very hard look at itself and understand that the country is changed,” he said. “If the Republican Party does not change along with that demographic, they a going to be in trouble.”
Powell also called on Republicans to focus on a more equitable and progressive economic policies that help middle and lower income Americans, as well as immigration reform. “Everybody wants to talk about who is going to be the candidate,” Powell said. “You better think first about what’s the party actually going to represent.”

There are racists in both parties.
No need in acting like Robert Byrd (D) never existed.

It is true that the other half of the one-party system we have, the Repubs, do need to expand it's base.

Obviously racism exists on both sides. Just listen to Obama's "former" Reverend. I do think overall the lower levels of the Right are more open about it though, so the politicians can be more blatant about pandering to that base.

It's probably pretty close when it comes to who's more intolerant towards different ideals. The Republican Party seems to have more people who are intolerant of blacks, Mexicans, and Middle Easterners though.

no we are intorerant of individuals that refuse to live by the civilized rules of man. I for one dont care if they are colored different than me or not and there was a time when civil rights leaders like King dreamed of the day my conservative republican view on race would be the norm. Now we have racial tenision driven by a bottom feeder divicive group mentalty that King would be ashamed to be part of today.

Wasn't talking about you. Just speaking from my experience of who seems to be more likely to hold racist views. And yes there are blacks who are racist towards whites and feel they are held down by them.... but there are also lots of whites who feel blacks are draining our society. It's on both sides.

yea we know. If a Republican criticizes the President he's racist. We got it.
I'll just regress, because I feel I've made myself perfectly redundant.

LOL so calling the president lazy is racist. Makes a lot of sense, I think Colin Powell should politely go Original Image: http://www.sectalk.c.../lanekiffin.gif himself if he thinks that is racist.

when we start seeing modern flash mobs made of whites looking to harm or kill blacks as wide spread as the black ones looking for whites Ill buy it. I think you are confused by the dispatortional number of minorities that fall into the group of non productive people I as a conservative will not treat the same way I do productive people

How is calling someone lazy a racial jab? Give me a f*cking break. John Sununu would also wipe the floor with any liberal in a debate, fwiw.

Guess you didn't read my first sentence.

And yes I think Powell took it too far with the point about someone saying "lazy" and assuming it was racial... but the Republican Party does have a problem shedding an image. And saying things like "shucking and jiving" don't help. I mean, it may help energize a small part of the base, but most other people are going" lolwut... who the hell still says that?"
