Considering the man has won 4 national championships in 8 seasons as a college coach and has won 3 out of the last 4 (went 10-3 the year he didn't win it all), is he on equal footing with the Bear?

I know Bryant won 6 National Championships in his time but given what Saban has currently done in such a short amount of time and in this era of parity, is he right there with the man that Bama fans emulate so much?

The Bear coached Alabama from 1958-1982 and won 6 national titles.  So in 24/25 years of coaching, he got 6 national championships.  Saban has gotten 4 in 8 years.

Looks pretty good if you ask me...

Saban isn't gonna be the figure that Bryant is in Alabama culture. He might be in college football culture someday, but as far as the state of Alabama, probably not gonna happen.

Correction, Bryant coached from 1945-1982 for all teams he was head coach and won 6 national titles.  The numbers still favor Saban.

While Saban will never probably be the figure that Bear Bryant is in Alabama culture, is he on his level in terms of his coaching legacy?

He was also the HC at MSU for 4 years, but yeah, still pretty good.

My bad, forgot about that one :P.  Either way, still very impressive.

Nick Saban will never surpass Bear Bryant as far as Alabama mythos / legend goes. Bear Bryant is an Alabama cultural icon. Alabama fans still wear hounds tooth hats

As a cultural icon it will never happen but I'm more trying to ask is he on the level in terms of his coaching legacy as it stands currently?

Hmm... the numbers would say he has already surpassed Bear Bryant in that department. I'd like to think it was harder to maintain a dynastic level of play back in Bear's day though.

This....I have family members that hope he doesn't win more than Bryant.

But, I gotta say Saban's current run is better than Bear's best one.  That's saying something, because that probably makes it the best run ever.

Still got 2 to go though, and 3 to surpass, because he'll never win more games than Bryant or more SEC championships (14)

There was much less parity then. Nebraska, Ohio State, Michigan, Oklahoma and teams like that were all DEVASTATINGLY good and there was very little trickle down.

Now teams like Stanford, Kansas State, Wisconsin and tons of other teams can win those conferences so there's more threats all around but there's not really any other teams right now that can say they are as talented/well coached as Alabama.

Oklahoma, Nebraska, Texas, USC and Michigan are all coached by dumbasses.

I completely disagree. Saban is clearly this generation's icon and will become legendary after this unprecedented run is over (dear Lord, please give us the wisdom to enjoy why we have now; amen) the way Bear Bryant was years ago.

As far as coaching legacy goes....
