The counter was our most dangerous play Merlin's first three years and we never really set it up this year. Just tried to randomly run it at times and it usually got blown up

A buddy and I were talking about this last night, actually (along with the absence of read-option, which is obviously the reason is easier to understand on that).
Dixon absolutely ran that shotgun-counter to perfection. The big run against Houston in '09 comes to mind, as well as this one from Perkins in '10.

i will continue to say that if you cant win with russell, you aint worth a crap as a coach...i talked all year long about our stupid ass route tree and the only thing that has to change is the plays and play calling...i know thats a lot to ask but i am tired of the backup QB always being the most popular guy on the team...now if russell cant over come this bowl game, then you make the change but i am not and probably will never be a fan of the 2 QB system...

perkins is a good back, but he will never be great, not that he has to, but hes just not the guy i want in there with 3rd and 2 and i think many of yall feel the same way. overall, perk has been a great addition to the offense, hes just not big enough to be a tough yardage kinda guy....which makes certain playcalling and player packages that much more questionable.

When personel are lacking, packages will lack

i agree mostly, but look at mullens year one.....way more creative of an offense that easily had the least amount of playmaking talent out of all the mullen teams. year one, he did more with less....hell, a screw up by mullen in that houston game by not challenging that bs call, and we would have been bowling that year. if he can do that with crooms 2* skill guys, he should be able to figure something out with his own 3*s.
edit: and to be fair, he did that in year two....exceptionally well actually.
