The players should have all been All SEC with four years of starting experience. Instead we struggled.
I'm still confused as to how Melvin Smith, Jonathan Banks' coach for his entire college career, has nothing to do with Banks' success. Also, looking at y'all's pass defense rankings:
2012 - 47th
2011 - 27th
2010 - 91st
2009 - 64th
2008 - 17th
2007 - 7th
You've been top 30 in the country three times with him as coach (67th the year before he came). You struggled a bit in '09 and '10, but overall it looks like your pass defense has been pretty solid despite having to contend with SEC powerhouses for recruits. Y'all were top 50 in the country despite having to face the 1st, 16th, 31st, 35th, 37th, and 47th most efficient QB's in the nation among others.
I think y'all are trying to dismiss Smith just a little too much here. It's understandable. When Malzahn left Auburn in 2011 we talked about how his offense sucked in 2011 anyway and that going back to the pro style would be going back to real Auburn football. Everyone does it.
