Just heard he is hired to coach our CBs. Curious on how he did at Miss St? Feedback from any Dawgs?

I know Jonathan Banks is one of the best corners in the country so I'm pretty happy about this.
I kept failing a math test at the University of Alabama because every time I added 5+3 I got 8 and they kept insisting that the right answer was 14.

Johnathan Banks was All American as a freshman coached by Tony Hughes as well. Melvin doesn't develop players well. He's a high intensity guy that screams and yells a lot but teaching technique isn't his specialty. From most accounts of what Auburn says aboutTrooper Taylor, Melvn Smith is equal.

Good hire based on his experience... Not the greatest recruiter in the world... Am not surprised though... Figured Johnson would come calling.. They have worked together before.

Very true..... Wasnt Banks brought in thinking he was going to be on the Offensive side of the ball?

overall, probably a "good" short-term hire for auburn. from most accounts, smith is a good coach, but he was getting a little stale at state. we probably needed a shake-up, and auburn could use a knowledgeable stable position coach. solid hire and i think we were ok with him moving on, not to say that we wanted him gone, but we were ok with him looking around. either way, hes a position coach so the world keeps turning.

When you've been somewhere as long as Melvin has been at State, you tend to lose some fire. We weren't getting his best the last couple of seasons, and it showed. He's so so, tbh. We won't miss him that much.

True, but he obviously didn't screw Banks up or anything. We've had a coaching staff the last few years that HAS screwed players with talent up. If he can motivate guys, teach them how to create turnovers (Look at the number of interceptions Auburn's secondary had this year. I'll give you a hint: There's no point even looking for something that doesn't exist) and make them work hard I think Johnson is already going to emphasize tackling technique for the entire team. I'd rather our guys not get burned every other passing play, but y'all's secondary definitely wasn't bad this year.

It had nothing to do with Melvin. The corners were all seniors and all but one has started since their freshman year.

He's been there for seven years but they had nothing to do with him because they were seniors? I'm confused.

Smith, who coached cornerbacks for MSU since 2007 after coaching the entire secondary in 2006, mentored Jonathan Banks who won the 2012 Jim Thorpe Award, which is presented annually to the nation's top defensive back. Banks was also a Walter Camp All-American and a first-team All-SEC selection.
Sorry, but your argument does not compute.
