Facebook, MySpace taking their toll: The number of college yearbooks being published has dropped from about 100 last year to about 80 this year, The (Lafayette, Ind.) Journal and Courier reports. A college media adviser says the decline is due to the popularity of social networking Web sites, such as Facebook and MySpace, which allow students to preserve their memories of school.

Could Tulane research lead to HIV prevention?
The National Primate Research Center at Tulane University has unearthed a potential breakthrough in the prevention of HIV in women. It involves topical microbicides called fusion inhibitors, which could block access to a major receptor that HIV uses to infect cells. The fusion inhibitor is applied topically to the vagina in a gel form and could become one of the first HIV prevention methods completely under a woman’s control. Dr. Ronald Veazey, a researcher with the New Orleans Regional Biosciences Initiative at Tulane, says there have been initial successes. “Our research has demonstrated the effectiveness of this approach in preventing transmission of the virus,” he says. “This could lead to extremely promising preventative treatments in the fight against HIV and AIDS. Developing affordable, preventative treatments for women has never been so important.” Half of the world’s HIV-infected individuals are female and 25% of all new cases of HIV in the United States are found in women.

Marathon Oil Corporation has announced a $2.5 million gift to LSU—$1.5 million to the College of Basic Sciences and $1 million to the College of Engineering. The Basic Sciences earmark is the largest corporation donation in the college's history and will go to support its geology and geophysics department. Of the $1.5 million, $750,000 is a personal gift from Marathon President and CEO Clarence Cazalot, an LSU alumnus, and his wife, Ann. The biggest chunk of the $1.5 million will go to establish the Marathon Geoscience Diversity Enrichment Program, which will fund up to 20 undergraduate scholarships and five doctoral research fellowships aimed at attracting high-achieving students from underrepresented groups into the undergraduate and graduate programs. Funds will also go toward renovating the atrium of the Howe-Russell Geoscience Complex. The engineering college's $1 million gift will go to programs aimed at attracting more talented female engineering students to LSU, enhancing "engineering literacy and awareness" in high schools, and diversity scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students, among other programs.

» Selling SECTalk.com? |

Hello Everyone. As most of you know, I don't have a ton of time to enhance this great site. I don't have the time to add to the conversation or post good stories anymore either. Luckily for us all, we have some great staff members that keep it clean inside as well as making sure things run smoothly.
I feel like the users deserve more though. Since I am unable to give SECTalk the TLC it deserves, I am considering selling to someone that can give it the life it deserves. The site has great potential, terrific search engine ranking, and great users. In addition, it's survived this long without the love and care it deserves.
That side, I am shopping for potential buyers. I have had over 10 unsolicited offers over the last few years, but I kept telling myself that I would get around to making this site even better. It has become clear that I can not do this. To make it better on it's users, I am taking this step.
Potential buyers should note that I do not intend to sell to someone that will revamp the site into something that will leave it's faithful users homeless or without the voice they have now. If I don't find the right type buyer, we'll... [Read More]
