SEC Power Rankings 10/20/13

Another week of college football and more "proof" that the SEC is down. Fans of other conferences just have to be licking their chops and laughing. Outside of Alabama, the SEC just is not getting it done this year.

For what it is worth, no offense to the Missouri Tigers is meant from this humble blogger. BUT, Mizzou just does not have that "nth factor" that commands national respect for an unbeaten team the way that a Florida, LSU or Georgia would. Even SC, TN & AR would get it, but Mizzou has not earned it yet. An undefeated Ole Miss, KY of MS State would also struggle to get national respect. It may not be "fair", but it is what it is...

1. Alabama  Is anyone surprised that Bama beat Arkansas worse than SC did? Yeah, me neither. It looks like the most interesting games this year for the Crimson Tide will come against Tigers, and probably THREE TIMES no less...

2. Missouri   Yeah, that's right, Mizzou holds the number 2 spot in the SEC power rankings. Yes, I am surprised. Yes, they would still be here even if Ole Miss had missed that field goal and LSU had managed to win yesterday. As surprised as I am to see them here, I will be even more surprised to see them lose this spot anytime soon. Tigers fans should be very happy and very proud.

3. Auburn  I really am not all that shocked that the Tigers knocked off the Aggies. I have felt that A&M has been a little overrated this year. Johnny Manziel is the most exciting player in college ball, but several teams found out this weekend just how important playing defense is. What a nice turnaround for Aubbie in just one year. Gus is probably a lock for coach of the year honors. Right now it really does look like the Iron Bowl will be for the right to represent the West in Atlanta.

4. Texas A&M  Did I mention that I thought that the Texas Aggies have been overrated this year? Well, at this point in time, they are easily the 4th best team in the SEC right now, and that is pretty dang good. Their only 2 losses have been tough fought heartbreakers against 2 of the best teams in the country. With their arch-rivals stepping up and beating Oklahoma, this may be the year for a very interesting Cotton Bowl.

5. South Carolina  How does a team go from being in the driver's seat to losing a game that they are supposed to win handily? The Gamecocks get a chance to redeem themselves next week against Mizzou, but it is very hard to see them winning that game, especially with their QB out. Three big games that could go either way still loom large for this team, the most important one being out of conference.

6. Louisiana State  At the beginning of the year I would not have believed you if you told me that 4 of the top 6 SEC teams would be from the West AND that one of them would not be Ole Miss. But here we are. Yes, LSU lost a tough game to the Rebels, but they still only have 2 losses. This is still a very good football team, but the Tigers have 2 very tough games coming up in the next 3 weeks.

7. Georgia  And this is where it gets tough - who is the best 3 loss team? I am going to have to put the Georgia Bulldogs in this spot because they have the best wins, against LSU and SC; and because their losses are just a little more respectable than the other 3 loss teams. UGA is very lucky to have a bye week coming up. The truth is that if they get a few key people back, it is very likely that the Dawgs will climb this power ranking ladder.

8. Mississippi The Rebels are finally on the right side of the conference power poll! What's more, the way the rest of their schedule looks, I will be very surprised if they don't go up a few spots before the year ends. They only have one game left that they will likely not be favored to win. Eight and four would be pretty nice for this team. Of course, nine and three would be better...

9. Florida  Oh how the mighty have fallen. Bottom half of the conference? For the mighty Gators? There will be a few that will argue that this team should be ahead of Georgia and Mississippi. And they would be, if they had just beaten LSU... The Gators will have an opportunity to set things straight in 2 weeks when they meet UGA in Jacksonville. More than ever, The World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party will define the season for this year's Florida team.

10. Vanderbilt   Hey look, Vandy just beat a team that was in the National Title discussion and moved all the way up to number TEN out of fourteen teams in the SEC. Will there be any "anchor down" flames coming my way this week? The 'Dores picked up a big win against a quality opponent, a win that would have shot them up higher in the rankings in any other conference. The problem is that the three loss teams ahead of them all have better quality wins. Split the next 2 against the Gators and Aggies and then we will talk.

11. Tennessee  And we finally see a big win for the Vols! It still was not enough to get them into the top half of the conference power poll, but it sure was a nice win. We need to see some more games like this before the Vols move up any. Fair or not, it will take some time and some more big wins to wipe away the stigma from their beat down against Oregon.

12. Mississippi State  The Bulldogs lose a spot during a bye week? Yeah, well who would have thought that Vandy and Tennessee would beat UGA and SC? Tough luck guys, but all you have to do is beat Kentucky and South Carolina and then you will start moving up!

13. Arkansas  The Razorbacks REALLY deserve to move down a spot. But they still have 3 wins. Sure, they just gave up FIFTY POINTS for the 2nd week in a row. But this week it was to Bama. At this point, I will be surprised if the Hogs win another game.

14. Kentucky  Three wins. Arkansas and MS State have THREE. The Wildcats have ONE. Beat Mississippi State and Kentucky leaves the cellar. You will jump at least 2 spots since the teams ahead of you both have zero conference wins.

Right now Pinkel has to be the frontrunner for coach of the year. Both teams had losing records but Mizzou is currently a top 5 team and Auburn has more talent. Both coaches are definitely doing great jobs but right now I'd give the edge to Pinkel.
bottom half is difficult to rank overall I think I agree

Auburn did not win a conference game last year. This is Gus' 1st year

He will win COY in a walk. Pinkel will come in 2nd.

Pretty sure that the entire Big XII would disband out of protest and incredulousness.

They don't factor in recruiting rankings in COY voting.

Our team was hopeless a year ago. Gus came in and changed  everything. Pinkel has always been a constant, he's just having a good year.

My point is Auburn undoubtedly has far more talent.

Yes, on paper. As high schoolers. Missouri looks pretty Posted Imageing talented to me.
I'd put OM higher but other than that I agree
I can see swapping UGA and Ole Miss, but I can't put a 2 loss LSU behind a 3 loss Rebel team that barely beat them at home

UGA vs Ole Miss would be a great game right now...
